Barren River Smoke Free Communities Coalition

The Smoke Free Communities Coalition is composed of concerned citizens and professionals in Warren, Simpson, Hart, Metcalfe, Barren, Butler, Logan, and Edmonson Counties in Kentucky. We have members representing the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Barren River District Health Department, Bowling Green Parks and Recreation, area schools, area hospitals, Lifeskills Regional Prevention Center, the Housing Authority, Graves Gilbert Clinic, the Healthy Start Program, March of Dimes, Warren County ASAP Board, Western Kentucky University, local physicians, and other individual community members. Our mission is to reduce the number of deaths and illnesses attributed to tobacco use in our communities.  Our goals include preventing youth initiation, promoting tobacco cessation programs, eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke, promoting tobacco control initiatives with diverse populations, and building capacity for the implementation of tobacco control initiatives. We welcome new members to join us and take part in making our communities healthier places to live, work, and play.

We have received the Champions for a Healthy Kentucky grant each year, and this year we also received a Commonwealth Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention grant.

New Survey Shows That Voters Want Smoke Free Laws

Smoke Free Communities volunteers have worked very hard to compile a survey of Warren County residents' opinions about second hand smoke. We surveyed over 1900 people and found that only 18% of Warren County residents oppose smoke free laws for all work places, including all restaurants and bars. On the other hand, about 72% support them. (10% were undecided.)

Another survey question asks if you agree that secondhand smoke causes illness to other people. Only 2% of those surveyed did not agree with this statement.
